People ask, sometimes, if we can turn the lights up. We cannot. There are no lights to turn up. The taproom runs on candles, a few low fixtures buried in the greenery, and whatever the season leaves in the windows.
This is a choice, not an oversight. Bright rooms are for getting things done. A dark room asks you to slow down, to lean in, to actually look at the person across the table. Conversation lowers to match the light. An hour goes soft at the edges. You stay longer than you meant to.
Moths understand this better than we do. They spend their whole lives moving toward small lights in large darkness, and there is something in that we recognize. The best nights do not happen under fluorescent glare. They happen in the amber corner of a candlelit room, when nobody is checking the time.
So we keep it dim. Bring someone. Let your eyes adjust. Wild things grow in the dark, and so, it turns out, do the good evenings.
